The first and second pages of this site are now reasonably complete, The third page which provides accounts of individual storms will continue to grow as and when I find more such information. So check back from time to time for updates.

Hurricane history:

In the aftermath of hurricane Ivan I decided to do a little research on hurricanes in Jamaica's recorded history. I have put together a provisional list, which probably leaves out some of the important ones, but I'll keep working on it.

Sources and research:

So far I have used sources on the Web, and books in my own collection. However, when I get back to the remarkable newspaper sources for Jamaican history I should be able to add more, contemporary, eye-witness accounts of these events.

This site provides maps and data on all Atlantic (and Caribbean) hurricanes from 1851 to 2003. You can check any year within that period for hurricanes affecting Jamaica - direct hits and near misses.

(Two pages which enable you to find the track of any Atlantic (or Caribbean) hurricane from 1886 to 2002, either by location or by year.

An excellent site of general information and statistics on North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones, especially relating to the Netherlands Antilles.

This site provides nice animated hurricane tracks (1886- 2001). Check at the bottom of the form for Caribbean locations. I have reservations about some of the tracks - having gone through Gilbert I know the eye passed over Jamaica, not to the north of it. Other direct hit hurricanes also appear to miss Jamaica to the north. But the animation is cute!
